He was ashamed of his past and he can rewrite that. Squall has the opportunity to change his past. However, she is too weak, and instead of changing her fate, she ends up creating that loop and the cycle of violence that lead to Ultimecia, like history repeating itself due to the refusal to learn from the past. The way I see it is that being so fixated on the past, she ends up trying to relive the past and kill the orphans. Even after they beat Ultimecia, she still exists. Where he was a lost kid who just wanted to feel loved. Squall, used to pushing others away, ends up at a time where he’s all alone. But as she tries looking for him, he’s completely lost. For Rinoa, all that matters is a time where she’s with Squall. They focus on a time and place they want to be in. That is never to be taken for granted.Īs time dekompresses, they try to go back to their time. What’s important is that they still have time. Whatever you believe she was gonna say, it doesn’t matter. There’s hope for the future, that this is not the ultimate end, the ultimate fate. That’s why we never hear what Ultimecia has to say. Right before Ultimecia can finish her sentence, everyone becomes rid of that fear of the future and change. The finiteness of time is what makes everything special. Even if the future doesn’t guarantee anything, at least we still have time. This might be the last shot to feel, to finally have friends. This might be the last chance to be together.
But through Rinoa and everyone else, they live for the present moment. No matter what you do, everything will go away.
She talks about how everything will fade away one day. This is to make them focus on a future that has never happened yet, thus making them lose their focus and absorbing them into time. Ultimecia, as a last attempt, exploits the fear of memory loss of the group in an effort to make them fear the future. Despite that, everyone is able to remain focused on all the memories, all their growth together, and not be absorbed into time. All the trauma she endured, all the humanity she lost, made her this faceless monster, consuming the very fabric of reality. It’s not over yet, and the final form of Ultimecia reveals itself. Even if Ultimecia junctioned herself to Griever, Squall thinks he could now do this. Rinoa became like Griever, she became his new found strength. It’s because of Rinoa’s will to tame Squall that he manages to overcome grief to open up, not let the present pass by, so he won’t have regrets later. But Squall is able to surpass that because of Rinoa. He wanted to be strong enough to conquer it, to surpass its strength. Griever was the embodiment of grief he felt from abandonment. They manage to hurt Ultimecia a bit, and it causes her to draw Griever from Squall’s mind and give it form. They stand together as they face the Ultimate Sorceress. It’s that focus on Squall above all that she manages to survive But they manage to make it through and succeed in existing in this timeline. She‘s still pessimistic, and thinks she’s gonna disappear because of the lack of shared history, but Squall insists that he’ll never let her disappear even if her persistence to stay by Squall’s side harmed her. They save Rinoa, and time kompression begins.
